BEVA announces CPD programme

The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) has announced that members will enjoy a 50 per cent reduction in fees for its CPD courses this year, due to some generous subsidies. Courses this year cover topics including modern equine dentistry, wound management and neck, back and pelvic problems in horses. See the BEVA CPD calendar for more.
Author calls for end to bullfighting

Author JM Coetzee has written to members of the Spanish Culture Committee, calling for current proposals to legalise bullfighting to be dropped. It is estimated that over 40,000 bulls are slaughtered each year during Spanish bullfights. The letter refers to proposals to give the practice legal protection as a "cultural pastime", which PETA have said would be a huge step backwards.

Applications open for Moredun Foundation Scholarship

Those hoping to apply for the Moredun Foundation Scholarship 2013/14 can do so now. The scholarship scheme provides the opportunity for up to three individuals to pursue a short-term project within the livestock health and welfare industry. Review of animal care standards launched

Lantra has launched a review of the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Animal Care and Welfare, in order to ensure they meet the requirements of the industry. Animal care includes a range of businesses and careers such as dog groomers, zoos, rehoming centres and veterinary practices. The standards outline the knowledge and skills required in order to carry out animal care roles competently. Lantra is calling for all those working in animal care to contribute their views as part of the project, which will run until the end of October.

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Virtual Question Time webinar is now available to listen again. Almost twice the number of veterinary professionals attended the online event, compared to the traditional Regional Question Time meetings. Furthermore, 100 per cent of delegates said they found the event useful in a poll. Click here to listen again.
National Equine Health Survey soon to arrive

Horse owners are being urged to take part in the annual National Equine Health Survey (NEHS), which runs from May 5-11. The data collected from the survey provides crucial information on common health issues in horses, including skin problems, lameness, weight issues and colic. The results will be shared across the sector to define priorities for future research, education and training. Click here to register for this year's survey.
Feed lions at Edinburgh Zoo

Visitors at Edinburgh Zoo are now able to feed its two resident lions, Jayendra and Kamlesh. The newly-launched experience, called Carnivore Magic Moment, allows two people to meet a zoo keeper, learn about the lions' history and about the conservation programme they belong to, as well as ask any questions. Participants will then be able to feed pieces of meat to Jayendra and Kamlesh using a feeding pole. Click here to book a Carnivore Magic Moment.
Ceva donates to Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution

Ceva Animal Health has announced that it will be donating £1 to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI) for every unit sold of its anti-infective range. Donations will be made until the end of June, and will help RABI support the country's farmers.
Durham practices invited to RCVS question time

Veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses in the Durham area have been invited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) to attend a regional question time meeting. Invitations have been sent to all local vets and VNs, but those from further afield are also welcomed. The meeting is to take place at 6:30pm on Wednesday, 15 May at Bowburn Hall. Opening with an update on RCVS developments from president Jacqui Molyneux, those attending will then be invited to put their questions to the RCVS officer team and Veterinary Nurses Council. AHT hold Dog Sportive cycling event

The Animal Health Trust (AHT) is holding its first Dogs Sportive cycling event to raise funds for research into animal diseases. Cycling routes have been designed to suit all ability levels, and include the Terrier Ride (25 miles), the Whippet Ride (50 miles) and the Greyhound Ride (80 miles). The event is to be held on Sunday 4 August at Lanwades Park, Suffolk, home of the AHT. Entry costs nineteen pounds plus a five pound donation to AHT. Click here to download an entry form.
Surgery prevented for prolapse dog

A Jack Russell-West Highland terrier cross has received life-changing treatment following partial disc prolapse. The 12-year-old dog named Beano underwent chiropractic therapy known as the McTimoney technique, which has prevented him from needing surgery. His owner said: "Without this treatment I would not like to think what decision we would have had to make."
Draft Dangerous Dogs (Amendment) Bill

The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee (EFRACom) will soon hear evidence on the draft Dangerous Dogs (Amendment) Bill. The evidence stage forms part of the pre-legislative scrutiny of the proposals and will focus on clarity, proportionality and effectiveness.
