Feedback Sought on Equine Trading Scheme
Consultation launched on voluntary registration scheme for trading horses.

The Equine Disease Coalition has launched a consultation seeking views on a proposal for a voluntary registration scheme for trading horses.

It is hoped that the Voluntary Equine Animals Trading Scheme will raise standards of animal health and welfare in the horse industry, leading to greater assurance when purchasing equines. There is also the implication that it could help improve levels of preparation in case of a major equine disease outbreak in the country.

The EDC was established in 2010 and comprises representatives from the Animal Health Trust, the British Equine Veterinary Association, Cambridge university, Defra, the Horse Trust, the RSPCA and World Horse Welfare.

Keith Meldrum, a veterinary consultant at World Horse Welfare, said: "This is a very exciting project and we are looking forward to receiving some interesting feedback from both traders and the horse owning public."

BSAVA publishes Guide to Nutrition in Small Animal Practice

The BSAVA has added a small animal nutrition advice booklet to its series of BSAVA guides.

The BSAVA Guide to Nutrition in Small Animal Practice offers a resource for veterinary professionals to provide appropriate nutrition for animals. As well as maintaining the wellbeing of healthy pets, the guide explores how nutritional requirements change in times of illness and disease.

The guide is divided into five sections, which explore the importance of nutritional assessment; diet types; feeding at different life stages; feeding for specific situations; and feeding for specific diseases. Online resources are also in the BSAVA Library including client handouts and videos.

It is designed to be suitable for referencing, in-depth case planning and team training sessions.

The BSAVA Guide to Nutrition in Small Animal Practice can be purchased online from the BSAVA store.
