BVA Appoints Chairman of New Veterinary Development Council
Richard Bennett, chairman of the new VDC
The veterinary profession is taking the lead on shaping the future of large animal veterinary practice with the appointment of Professor Richard Bennett as the independent chairman of the newly-established Veterinary Development Council.

The concept of the Veterinary Development Council (VDC) was recommended in Professor Philip Lowe’s report ‘Unlocking Potential: A report on veterinary expertise in food animal production’, which was published in August 2009.
 
Commenting on his appointment, Professor Bennett said: “The initial aim of the Veterinary Development Council is to explore and define the ‘market’ for farm animal veterinary services in the UK, considering both supply and demand. Ultimately I want the VDC to identify ways in which the veterinary profession might need to develop to ensure it remains thriving and provides the necessary expertise, goods and services that its clients, and society more generally, needs.”

Annual submission deadline small pet animal exemptions

 Companies marketing medicines for small pets exempt from authorisation must submit their annual return to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) by 30 November 2026.

Submitting this annual return ensures continued compliance with regulatory requirements for products marketed without a full Marketing Authorisation. The exemption specifically applies to products intended for animals, cage birds, terrarium animals, small rodents, ferrets and rabbits.

BVA urges 'continued vigilance' over bluetongue

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has urged vigilance following a concerning rise in Bluetongue (BTV) cases in sheep and cattle.

In a recent statement, the BVA noted that members are reporting more severe clinical signs and higher mortality rates than in previous years.

'We know that farm vets are working hard to support farmers and animals affected by this outbreak, during what is an extremely difficult time for all involved,' they stated. 'Continued vigilance to identify disease early is vital and vaccination remains the best way of protecting animals from this disease.'
