Sadberge dog lover James Hewitt has raised over £1,000 yesterday for his local Dogs Trust rehoming centre by going for the ultimate walkies.

In just 12 hours he took an incredible 107 resident rescue dogs for a one-on-one walk around the rehoming centre’s fields, covering a distance 53km (33 miles) in just one day.

26 year old James, who works as a Veterinary Nurse Assistant at Dogs Trust Darlington, was presented with a cheque for £500 by Councillor Jim Ruck, Mayor of Darlington, who rehomed a Lurcher from the centre three years ago.

James Hewitt says: ''My sponsored walk was a great challenge but I had lots of fun and even the occasional bouts of rain didn't put me off my stride. Thanks to the generous people who supported my challenge I have already raised over £1000 for Dogs Trust!”

It is still possible to make a donation to the challenge by visiting www.justgiving.com/James-Hewitt.

RCVS annual renewal fee for vets due

RCVS' annual renewal fee for veterinary surgeons is now due. Vets must pay their renewal fee before Wednesday, 1 April 2026.

This year's standard annual fee has increased to 431 from last year's 418. This is an approximately three per cent increase, as approved by RCVS Council and the Privy Council.

Tshidi Gardner, RCVS treasurer, said: "The small fee increase will be used to help deliver both our everyday activities and our new ambitious Strategic Plan, which includes aims such as achieving new legislation, reviewing the Codes of Professional Conduct and supporting guidance, and continuing to support the professions through activities such as the Mind Matters Initiative, RCVS Academy and career development."

A full breakdown of the new fees is on the RCVS website. Information about tax relief is available on the UK government website.
