BSAVA abstract award winners announced
Inigo Sanz-Gonzales, joint winner of the BSAVA Congress 2021 Clinical Abstract Awards.

Inigo Sanz-Gonzales and Ditte Erika Leth Vasby were selected from more than 125 research submissions.

The joint winners of the BSAVA Congress 2021 Clinical Abstract Awards have been revealed.

BSAVA’s Clinical Abstract Awards took place virtually on 24 – 26 May, with presentations covering topics such as oncology, orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery.

Inigo Sanz-Gonzales, ECVIM cardiology resident in training at the University of Edinburgh, and Ditte Erika Leth Vasby, a senior vet in companion animal general medicine and dermatology at the University of Copenhagen, were selected from more than 125 research submissions from across the globe.

Inigo’s abstract, entitled “Predictive value of cardiac remodelling on survival in dogs with persistent atrial standstill – the UK perspective”, sought to determine the survival of dogs in the UK with persistent atrial standstill (PAS) after pacemaker implantation and the prognostic value of cardiac remodelling.

The Congress Programme Committee were impressed by Inigo’s innovative presentation and praised the planning and execution of the multi-centre project.

Ditte’s presentation was named “Evaluation of a point-of-care dot Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay to detect antibodies against canine parvovirus, distemper virus and adenovirus before revaccination”.

The study described the findings of a prospective non-inferiority study of a point-of-care semi-quantitative titer test performed on canine serum samples and compared to gold-standard analysis.

The Congress Programme Committee commended Ditte for the quality of her presentation and the practical and clinically applicable findings of the study.

Joe Fenn, BSAVA Congress clinical abstracts chair, said: “Thank you to all the 2021 abstract presenters and attendees, and many congratulations to the winners! It was a pleasure to hear about your fascinating research and witness such stimulating discussion. The willingness of the community to embrace the challenge and opportunity of online presentation was again much appreciated.”

All of the abstracts are now available to view in the BSAVA Library.

BSAVA publishes Guide to Nutrition in Small Animal Practice

The BSAVA has added a small animal nutrition advice booklet to its series of BSAVA guides.

The BSAVA Guide to Nutrition in Small Animal Practice offers a resource for veterinary professionals to provide appropriate nutrition for animals. As well as maintaining the wellbeing of healthy pets, the guide explores how nutritional requirements change in times of illness and disease.

The guide is divided into five sections, which explore the importance of nutritional assessment; diet types; feeding at different life stages; feeding for specific situations; and feeding for specific diseases. Online resources are also in the BSAVA Library including client handouts and videos.

It is designed to be suitable for referencing, in-depth case planning and team training sessions.

The BSAVA Guide to Nutrition in Small Animal Practice can be purchased online from the BSAVA store.
