Skomer Island’s seals killed in recent storms
Skomer Island is an important breeding ground for the Atlantic grey seal.

Wildlife Trust launches fundraising appeal

Recent storms have killed more than two-thirds of seal pups living on Pembrokeshire’s Skomer Island.

According to a report by BBC News, storms Ophelia and Brian also wiped out 90 seal pups living on nearby Ramsey Island.

Lizzie Wilberforce, conservation manager for Skomer said: "These storms were the strongest since 1987 and unfortunately, violent storms like these are becoming more common as our islands are exposed and vulnerable to severe weather.

"It is vital that we start to put protocols in place to better deal with the potential impacts, on both the islands' wildlife and infrastructure."

Skomer Island is owned by The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales and is an important breeding ground for the Atlantic grey seal. The Trust is now aiming to raise at least £25,000 to monitor the impact on wildlife, repair the damage, and storm-proof the islands for the future.

Annual submission deadline small pet animal exemptions

 Companies marketing medicines for small pets exempt from authorisation must submit their annual return to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) by 30 November 2026.

Submitting this annual return ensures continued compliance with regulatory requirements for products marketed without a full Marketing Authorisation. The exemption specifically applies to products intended for animals, cage birds, terrarium animals, small rodents, ferrets and rabbits.

BVA urges 'continued vigilance' over bluetongue

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has urged vigilance following a concerning rise in Bluetongue (BTV) cases in sheep and cattle.

In a recent statement, the BVA noted that members are reporting more severe clinical signs and higher mortality rates than in previous years.

'We know that farm vets are working hard to support farmers and animals affected by this outbreak, during what is an extremely difficult time for all involved,' they stated. 'Continued vigilance to identify disease early is vital and vaccination remains the best way of protecting animals from this disease.'
