Veterinary professionals gather from all walks of life
Delegates from all over the UK and overseas have gathered for this year's two-day British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) Scottish Congress.
Held in Edinburgh on August 31 and September 1, the congress programme catered for all members of the profession, offering more than just continuing professional development (CPD).
The event provided the 125 veterinary surgeons, 70 veterinary nurses and – for the first time – 32 veterinary students in attendance with its largest ever exhibition, plus a three-course dinner and dancing social event.
A special programme was dedicated to helping students make the transition from veterinary school to working life, with advice on getting a first job, writing an effective CV, what to expect from your first day in practice and dealing with feelings of loneliness and isolation.
Other lectures included cardiology, pyrexia of unknown origin, pet travel, neurology and how to make the most of your practice laboratory.
Four case reports were also presented at the congress, with the audience choosing the winner – "Management of the prolonged food deprivation, neurological dysfunction and prevention of refeeding syndrome in a cat", by Ide Hearun.
Veterinary nurse, Shona Campbell, who attended the congress for the first time, said the event was welcoming and friendly, with a great quality of lectures and enthusiastic speakers.
She added: "I'll be back!"

Two independent vets have launched a podcast to help owners strengthen their bond with pets. Dr Maggie Roberts and Dr Vanessa Howie, who have worked in both veterinary practice and major charities, are keen to use their experience to enable people to give pets a better life.
