Dogs Trust wins £1,000

Dogs Trust has been given £1,000 after it came second in a vote to award UK charities with some much-needed funds.

The money comes as part of a nation-wide campaign, called Big Break, run by Bacs Payment Schemes Ltd - the organisation behind Direct Debit.

Each month from March to June, Bacs is setting aside £5,000.

It is awarding the most voted-for charity £2,000, the runner-up £1,000 and sharing the last £2,000 out among other charities.

New Animal Abuse book launching

A new book entitled Animal Abuse - Helping Animals and People, is to be launched at an event jointly organised by CABI and the RCVS Charitable Trust on June 4, 2013. Issues covered in the book include foie gras production, pedigree dog breeding, veterinary forensics and the link between human and animal abuse.

Authored by Catherine Tiplady, the book draws on her experience as a shelter worker and veterinary surgeon, providing practical advice through interviews, case studies and dealing with difficulties. The launch - which takes place in London from 6:00-8:00pm - will provide the opportunity to meet the author and discuss topics dealt with in the book. Click here for more information.

Author JM Coetzee has written to members of the Spanish Culture Committee, calling for current proposals to legalise bullfighting to be dropped. It is estimated that over 40,000 bulls are slaughtered each year during Spanish bullfights. The letter refers to proposals to give the practice legal protection as a "cultural pastime", which PETA have said would be a huge step backwards.
