Louisa Baker is the new BVNA President
Took up her new role at BVNA Congress

Louisa Baker has become the new President of the British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA). She was inaugurated at the Presidential Handover Ceremony at BVNA Congress on Sunday 7th October 2012.

In her first speech as BVNA President, Louisa described it as a "surreal experience" to be taking on the role, after only four years since joining BVNA council in 2008 with the "sole aim to support the association in any way I could."

During her time on BVNA Council, she has been involved with the Education Committee, Veterinary Nursing Week and has been Honorary Treasurer. She was also instrumental in the launch and development of the BVNA Revision Apps, and cites her main area of interest as the education of veterinary nurses.

Describing herself as both humble and proud to stand where she is today, Louisa promised to continue the good work of all the previous presidents who have collectively made the BVNA what it is today, with her particular aim being to progress further with statutory regulation for veterinary nurses.

Best wishes go to Louisa in her new role.

As well as describing regulatory developments, the advice highlights the importance of animal ID, registration and traceability in disease control and other compliance arrangements.

The guidance can be found here. More detail is expected as negotiations progress.

Lords Committee opens Pet Parasite Medication inquiry

The House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee will launch its inquiry into Pet Parasite Medication (PPM) on Wednesday (3 June).

Focusing on treatments containing fipronil and imidacloprid, the inquiry will seek to understand distribution pathways and the impacts of PPM use and non-use on biodiversity and human health. It will also cover current regulation, monitoring, and the potential implications for pets and their owners.

The committee will hear evidence from environmental non-governmental organisations and research institutes. The public can follow the proceedings live on Parliament TV or in person in the Palace of Westminster.
